The trip to South Africa was a wonderful experience, whether drawing in the market in Maputo, Mozambique, or sketching placid rhinoceros on the Kariega Game Reserve, South Africa. It opened up a completely different world.
We visited Shakaland Cultural Village and watched the dancing, saw the unique thatched homes and shared the life of the Zulus, enhanced by the explanations in the ‘click’ language of the area.
We visited George with its astonishing Railway museum and Wilderness beach with its exciting high surf roaring across the white sand.
I also painted a watercolour portrait and did a still-life demonstration on board for the passengers. There was a rough swell at the time and it was like ‘painting on ice’- I was rolling from one side of the ship to the other, hitting the paper with a brush every so often!
Throughout the trip I drew everything I possibly could and at the end, put up an exhibition of watercolours and drawings from my sketchbook. The passengers (who had followed my progress with some amusement and considerable interest throughout) bought £600.00 worth of work and the money raised was donated to the RNLI (The Royal National Lifeboat Institution)
